Mazda CX-9 Transmission Fluid Change & Level Check (2007–2009) | Easy DIY

In this video, I'll show you how to change the automatic transmission fluid on a 2007–2009 Mazda CX-9 using the correct overflow tube (standpipe) method to set the fluid level. This procedure can save you hundreds of dollars and help extend the life of your transmission.
Unlike many vehicles, the Mazda CX-9 does not have a traditional transmission dipstick. The fluid level is checked through the overflow standpipe built into the drain plug, so it's important to follow the correct procedure and make sure the transmission is at the proper temperature before setting the final level.
🔧 Transmission Fluid Used
Type: Mazda ATF M-V (recommended)
Compatible Alternative: Aisin AW-1 or JWS 3309 compatible fluid (verify compatibility for your specific transmission before use)
Approximate Drain & Fill Capacity: 3.5–4.5 quarts (varies depending on how much drains out)
Total Transmission Capacity: Approximately 10–11 quarts
📝 Procedure Overview
Warm up the transmission to operating temperature.
Raise and safely support the vehicle on a level surface.
Remove the transmission fill plug.
Remove the drain plug and drain the old transmission fluid.
Reinstall the drain plug and refill with fresh ATF through the fill port.
Start the engine and cycle the shifter through all gear positions.
With the transmission at the proper temperature, remove the overflow/check plug to verify the correct fluid level.
Add fluid if necessary until a small steady stream drips from the overflow tube.
Reinstall all plugs and verify there are no leaks.
⚠️ Always make sure the vehicle is level when checking the transmission fluid level. Overfilling or underfilling can cause shifting issues and premature transmission wear.
