Most homeowners choose their paint color first.

Designers don’t.

By the time I choose paint, I’ve already selected the jumping-off piece, created the color palette, chosen the furniture, lighting, and artwork. The paint color’s job is to tie the entire room together.

A few extra designer tips:

🎨 Test paint in natural and artificial light because colors change throughout the day.

🎨 Paint two coats on a sample board instead of directly on the wall. With white behind the color, you’ll see the true color, and you can move the sample around the room to compare it with your sofa, flooring, wood tones, and metal finishes.

🎨 If you use peel-and-stick samples, place them on a white piece of cardstock so you can move them around before committing.

Match your $80 gallon of paint to your $5,000 sofa—not the other way around.
