John Healey resigned as Defence Secretary after seeing the final Defence Investment Plan. His resignation letter, written on House of Commons paper, warns the settlement would reduce military readiness, increase risk to personnel, and could make Britain less safe.

The numbers: defence spending rises to just 2.68% of GDP by 2030. We'll already be at 2.6% next year. That's a 0.08 percentage point increase over four years, while the Government's own intelligence warns of a possible Russian attack on NATO by 2030.

Healey's words: the Prime Minister is "unable", the Treasury "unwilling."

So who do you trust — the man who ran UK defence for two years and walked, or the Treasury that set the numbers?
