The Treasury scrapped a numeracy test from its graduate scheme in the name of diversity, quietly removing the numerical reasoning test from its application process in 2020 after deciding it was producing the wrong results.

The department cited "evidence of the test having an adverse impact on candidate diversity" as its justification, a measure uncovered by The Spectator and described by critics as "insane" and "through the looking glass."

Speaking with Philip Kiszley of the New Culture Forum, Talk's Julia Hartley-Brewer says: "The Treasury ditched numeracy tests because they weren't hiring enough diverse people, quite useful when you're dealing with money and accounts."
