First Lady Melania Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the new "Fostering the Future" initiative, a programme designed to help children in foster care build long-term financial security through dedicated savings and investment accounts.
Speaking at the Treasury Department, Melania Trump said the programme will give foster youth access to asset ownership and wealth-building opportunities, helping them transition into adulthood with greater independence and financial stability. She emphasised that ownership, education and savings can provide a stronger foundation for future success.
Under the initiative, state child welfare agencies and foster youth representatives will be able to establish "Fostering the Future" accounts for eligible children. Treasury officials said 23 governors have already pledged support, with the administration aiming for participation from all 50 states.
Bessent described the accounts as part of a broader effort to expand financial opportunity for young Americans, particularly those in foster care. He noted that foster youth often face significant challenges after leaving the system, including homelessness and unemployment, and argued that the new accounts could provide a meaningful financial foundation for adulthood.
The administration says the programme is intended to expand economic opportunity, encourage long-term savings and help foster children build assets that can support education, housing and future career goals.
