Fiercely Independent: PM Anwar Ibrahim Slams Global Double Standards at 39th APR

Speaking at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a powerful rebuke of international hypocrisy, charting a path of fierce independence for Malaysia's foreign policy. Anwar made it clear that while Malaysia remains a dedicated trading nation, it will never sacrifice its moral clarity for geopolitical convenience.

Anwar took aim at the stark decay of international norms, highlighting how powerful nations selectively uphold international law while turning a blind eye to severe crises. He described the catastrophic loss of life in Gaza, the bombardment of Lebanon, and the systematic dispossession of the Palestinian people as a campaign of settler colonialism that the world cannot sit idly by and watch. He lambasted Western powers that lecture the Global South on human rights while condoning such barbarity, calling the double standards totally absurd.

The Prime Minister also pulled no punches on economic unfairness, citing a recent incident where a Norwegian supplier unilaterally cancelled a delivery of naval strike missiles to Malaysia despite a 95 percent advance payment. Anwar called out the dangerous doctrine of "one rule for me, another for thee," warning that such transactional behavior deeply erodes global trust.

Faced with escalating tensions between the United States and China, Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia's stance: fiercely independent, proactive, and non-aligned. He emphasized that non-alignment is not an excuse for passivity on systemic injustices. Instead, Malaysia will aggressively engage both superpowers while prioritizing national security and open communication.

Anwar reiterated that Malaysia’s future remains bound to ASEAN centrality. Whether managing engagements with all internal factions in Myanmar or maintaining regional peace, solutions must be locally driven and free from external coercion. Ultimately, he reminded the audience that foreign policy directly impacts the livelihoods, food security, and jobs of ordinary citizens. In an uncertain global order, diversification and steadfast adherence to international law are national necessities.
