Should Moses Itauma Leave Ben Davison? 🤔

In this video, I break down Moses Itauma’s most recent fight against Jermaine Franklin and analyse his development as a fighter under Ben Davison.

I analyse Moses Itauma & Tyson Fury, side by side, when they fought under Ben Davison. Itauma leaps in and out of range, as his feet are the first line of defence 🦶 Moses also feints heavily upstairs and exaggerates some of his feints beyond what is necessary to set traps & engineer openings. Itauma expending that much energy upstairs and downstairs has a cardiovascular tax 🫀 Not every coach is compatible with their fighter’s instincts and long term trajectory. Anthony Joshua and Ben Davison didn’t work out, once shots started firing back his way.

It’s common practice for Ben Davison fighters to throw the jab from below the hip. Fabio Wardley, Billy Joe Saunders, Moses Itauma etc have done this commonly. There are a set of common principles between the stable’s fighters. However, Moses Itauma is uniquely placed. Usyk uses heavy feinting but because he doesn’t leap in & out of range, using his feet as the first line of defense… it’s less taxing on his engine. Itauma is doing both simultaneously and it could be argued that this contributed to the concerns in his corner at the end of Round 1, in his fight with Jermaine Franklin.

On the other hand, there are advantages to Ben Davison’s version of Tyson Fury - compared to the rematch version of Fury, who fought under Sugar Hill. While Tyson may have been more streamlined, he was less unpredictable. By constantly feinting and heavily, it’s very difficult to read what is and isn’t a genuine punch being engineered.

So should Moses Itauma tighten up his current style & streamline things - to help his stamina? Or can Moses comfortably go 12 rounds in a hard, competitive fight at the top level? Is he on the right track to getting the most out of himself as a fighter, for when he faces the likes of Oleksandr Usyk and the other elite heavyweights? Let’s break things down 🧠
