For years, Burkina Faso stood at the center of one of the most difficult security crises in Africa.
Beginning in 2015, armed jihadist groups expanded across large parts of the country. Communities were isolated. Roads became dangerous. Government institutions disappeared from many localities. Thousands of families fled their homes as violence spread across the Sahel.
Among the areas most affected were Sebba in Yagha Province and Solhan in Séno Province. These communities experienced insecurity, attacks, displacement, and economic disruption. For many residents, daily life became a struggle for survival.
Yet in recent years, Burkina Faso has launched one of the most ambitious military recovery campaigns in its modern history.
Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the country reorganized its security forces, expanded recruitment, increased cooperation between regular soldiers and civilian defense volunteers, and shifted toward a more aggressive strategy aimed at reclaiming territory.
Today, supporters of the government's security strategy point to places like Sebba and Solhan as examples of areas where state authority has returned and where communities are rebuilding after years of insecurity.
This is the story of how Burkina Faso's armed forces sought to recover lost territory and why many citizens view Sebba and Solhan as symbols of resilience and recovery.
