Anwar Ibrahim Warns of ‘Post-Normal Times’ as Religious Leaders Gather for Peace Summit

At the 3rd International Summit of Religious Leaders 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a stark warning about what he described as the dangerous normalization of violence and human suffering in today's world.

Speaking before an international audience of religious leaders, scholars, and youth representatives, Anwar highlighted what some observers call “post-normal times” — an era in which traditional moral boundaries are being eroded and public perceptions are increasingly shaped by powerful political and media interests.

“The definition of normality is being subverted fundamentally,” Anwar said, expressing concern that wars involving the killing of women and children are often portrayed as routine events rather than humanitarian catastrophes.

The Prime Minister warned that constant exposure to scenes of violence, destruction, and human indignity risks desensitizing younger generations. He noted that children and youth today are regularly confronted with disturbing images from conflict zones, raising concerns about the long-term impact on society’s moral conscience.

Referring to ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, Anwar spoke of what he described as the dehumanization of society and the continued suffering of civilians despite repeated calls for peace. He criticized the cycle of ceasefires that are announced only to be violated shortly afterward, observing that military operations frequently continue even while negotiations are underway.

Recalling the inaugural summit held in the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza conflict that erupted in October 2023, Anwar noted that despite numerous diplomatic efforts, violence and devastation have continued to affect communities across the region.

Against this backdrop, he underscored the importance of the International Summit of Religious Leaders as a platform for moral leadership and collective action. Anwar argued that religious leaders have a vital responsibility to speak out against injustice, influence those in positions of power, and ensure that ethical considerations remain central to global decision-making.

He called on faith leaders to continue exercising courage and perseverance in advocating for peace, emphasizing that humanity’s future depends not only on political calculations but also on strong moral and ethical foundations.

The summit, themed “Religious Leaders and Youth Empowerment: Advancing Coexistence and Social Harmony,” brought together representatives from diverse faith traditions to discuss pathways toward peace, dialogue, and social cohesion in an increasingly turbulent world.
