HON. IBRAHIM TIA, MINISTER-NER, FREE PRIMARY HEALTH CARE POLICY LAUNCHED IN NORTH EAST REGION

The North East Régional Minister, Hon. Ibrahim Tia, has officially launched the Free Primary Health Care Policy, known to the general public as the Mahama Care Health program, to Strengthen Universal Health Coverage in the region.
The (FPHC) Policy reaffirms the government's commitment to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare services across Ghana.
The regional launch and stakeholder orientation programme took place on 16th June, 2026, at the Regional Coordinating Council conference hall, bringing together key stakeholders from the health sector, government institutions, development partners, and other relevant agencies to deepen understanding of the new policy and its implementation.
The programme commenced with registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by an opening prayer, introduction of the chairman, recognition of dignitaries, and opening remarks by the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS). Mr. Godfred Kwame Sarpong.
Dr. Abdul Rauf Sulemana Mohammed, Ag. The Deputy Director for Public Health in North East Région took participants through a detailed presentation on the overview of the Free Primary Health Care Policy, highlighting its objectives, implementation strategies, and expected impact on healthcare delivery throughout the region.
The presentations were followed by interactive discussions that allowed stakeholders to ask questions and make valuable contributions.
Mr. Iddrisu Mohammed, Deputy Director for Clinical Care in North East Région, made a présentation on the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares), which outlined the fund's role in supporting healthcare financing and improving access to essential medical services for vulnerable citizens.
The Regional Director of Ghana Health Services in North East Région, Mr. Godfred Kwame Sarpong, talked about the Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for the Free Primary Health Care Policy, emphasizing accountability, effective implementation, and continuous assessment to ensure the policy achieves its intended outcomes.
Hon. Ibrahim Tia, the Regional Minister for North East Région, performed the official launch of the policy. In a brief statement, he underscored the government's commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of location or economic status, has access to quality primary healthcare services. He further called on all stakeholders in the entire North East Région to collaborate effectively to ensure the successful implementation of the policy across the region.
The event concluded with closing remarks by the chairman, Mr. Edward Addai, who is the Hospital Director of BMC Nalerigu. He placed emphasis on the general public to ensure that everyone is registered with NHIS, since this program is linked to all registered NHIS., Mr. Edward confirmed that BMC will be serving as a referral center for the region.
Miss Emmanuella Webere Avogo , a Nutrition Officer at Chereponi District in an interview with LOM NEWS GH commended government for the initiative, according to her if only government and stakeholders will remain committed for it's sustainability, it will remain the best form of giving the needy the best health care services.
The launch marks a significant step towards strengthening the healthcare system in the North East Region and advancing Ghana's agenda of achieving Universal Health Coverage through accessible, equitable, and quality primary healthcare services.
