Father Mario Alexis Portella is a Catholic priest and minor canon at the Cathedral of Florence, as well as a visiting fellow at the Danube Institute. He holds doctorates in canon and civil law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, specializing in Islamic law, along with degrees in medieval history and political science from Fordham and St. John’s University.

He is also an author of several books, including "Islam, Religion of Peace?" and works on Ethiopian and Eritrean monasticism, some of which have sparked controversy.
