Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization and the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. Major League Baseball comprises 30 teams from various states across the U.S. and Canada (29 from the U.S. and 1 from Canada). The league's official emblem is a baseball bat, believed to be based on Jackie Robinson, a legendary player and the first African American to play in the league. These 30 teams are divided into two separate divisions: the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), each with 15 teams, divided into three conferences (East, Central, and West). Beginning in 1903, the two leagues collaborated but remained completely separate until they merged under a single governing body headed by the Commissioner of Baseball in 2000.
