前日16日（同17日）の同カードでは6打数無安打に終わり、日本人初の4試合連続アーチとはならず。4試合ぶりに快音がなかった。迎えたこの日は花巻東高の先輩、菊池雄星投手との対戦となった。
通算での対戦成績は23打数7安打の打率.304、3本塁打、5打点、1四球7三振と得意にしている菊池に対し、初回は中飛に打ち取られた。しかし、3回の第2打席は左前に落とすヒットを放つと、0-4で迎えた5回2死二塁では右前に適時打を記録した。さらに送球の間に二塁を陥れる好走塁も見せた。
7回には1死一塁で右腕バークと対戦。外角ボール球のスライダーに詰まらされたが、快足を飛ばして一塁まで激走。内野安打をもぎ取り、大谷は雄叫びを上げた。
