In this video we explain the complete poem in simple English: the meaning of the title, how the poet wrote some funny lines in a merry mood, why he calls them "so queer, so very queer", how he sends the paper to the printer with his servant, and how the servant's reaction grows line by line — a grin, a grin from ear to ear, a chuckle, a roar, a split waistband, five burst buttons and finally tumbling in a fit. Then the poet watches him for ten sleepless days and nights and decides never again to write as funny as he can.
Difficult poetic words like wondrous merry mood, queer, albeit, sober man, mighty limb, trifling jest, "the devil to pay", chuckling, waistband and wretched are explained simply, along with the humour and exaggeration used by the poet, so students can understand the poem easily and revise quickly before the board exam.
