In the deep waters off Germany and beyond, scientists are using autonomous underwater robots to follow sperm whales and study their complex sound patterns. These whales communicate through clicks and codas that travel for miles in total darkness. Traditional tracking methods have limitations as whales dive more than a kilometre deep and stay underwater for long periods, making it hard to track their movements and communication. Now researchers from Project CETI are using buoyancy-powered underwater gliders that can move through the ocean for months while listening, analysing and following whale signals in real time.
