Bloomberg reporter Katrina Manson, author of a new book on Project Maven, discusses where the US and China actually stand in the race to deploy AI on the battlefield. The US does not publish its real intelligence assessment of China's capabilities, but Manson's read, based on years of reporting, is that the US military believes it leads on adoption, workflow practice, and combat experience.
Part of what gives the US that edge is having seen AI fail in the field and adapted quickly. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and US AI was deployed in support, the algorithms didn't work. They had been trained on desert environments and couldn't recognize tanks in snow. The US responded by retraining the algorithms overnight, gathering new satellite data, and improving accuracy back up to useful levels. That cycle of failure and adaptation is something the US hopes China has not yet been able to replicate. "It may be down to practice," Manson says, "when you actually are in a real wartime situation."
