Anthropic just released Fable 5 — a model reviewers are calling the most capable AI in the world by a wide margin. A few days later, the US government ordered them to pull it.

On Friday at 5:21pm ET, the Commerce Department sent Anthropic an export-control directive: suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national — not just people overseas, but foreign nationals INSIDE the United States, including Anthropic's own non-citizen employees. To comply, Anthropic disabled the models for everyone.

It's the kind of restriction you normally see around weapons, defense, and space tech — not a chatbot you were using the day before. Anthropic is fighting it, calling it a misunderstanding over a narrow jailbreak that (they argue) works on other models too. Which raises the funny contradiction: when they're selling Fable it's the best model on Earth — when they're defending it, it's "not that different from GPT-5.5."

Is this connected to the earlier fight where the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a national-security supply-chain risk? Nobody's confirmed it — but the timing, mid-IPO, is hard to ignore.
