In a significant shift of its national security strategy, Nigeria is moving toward defence self-sufficiency by forging deep military ties with Turkey. During the 2026 Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Defence Minister Christopher Musa finalised a major agreement with Ankara that includes the joint production of military hardware and the deployment of 200 Nigerian Special Forces for specialised training in Türkiye. This approach aims to modernise Nigeria’s military while reducing its historic reliance on Washington. Relations with the US have been tested following claims by President Donald Trump regarding Christian persecution in Nigeria, allegations Abuja denies, citing the indiscriminate nature of extremist violence. Despite these tensions, tactical cooperation continues, evidenced by recent US airstrikes in Sokoto. Facing a triple threat from Boko Haram and ISWAP, northwestern banditry, and instability across the Sahel, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is also engaging the EU and Egypt to secure more security partners.
