Ukraine has struck deep inside Russia using a domestically made cruise missile called the Flamingo. On June 10, President Zelensky confirmed Flamingo missiles hit a military plant in Cheboksary that supplies components for Russian drones and missiles. The same missile previously struck the Votkinsk plant in the Udmurt Republic, which manufactures Russia’s Iskander ballistic missiles. The Flamingo carries a 1,150-kilogram warhead, has a range of 3,000 kilometres, and was developed in just nine months. Zelensky says all missiles used in the longest-range strike successfully evaded Russian air defences. Cary Johnston explains what the Flamingo is, what it has hit, and why it changes the war.
