Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, delivers opening remarks ahead of the G7 Summit in Évian, France, under the French Presidency.

Her message is direct: the world is facing geopolitical fragmentation, economic reconfiguration and rapid technological change. She warns that global imbalances and overcapacity are becoming dangerous for the global economy, pointing to the EU’s record trade deficit with China and insisting that Europe’s strategy is “de-risk, not decouple.”

Von der Leyen also focuses on Ukraine, saying Europe will keep its unwavering support as Russia’s war continues. She highlights the EU’s €90 billion loan package for Ukraine, new support for winter preparedness and the importance of anchoring Ukraine in Europe.

The speech also turns to the Middle East, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, energy security, AI safety and the protection of children online. At G7 Évian, Europe’s message is clear: unity, resilience and democratic coordination are now essential.
