Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a firm sovereignty message as Canada and the European Union moved toward a deeper strategic partnership.

Responding to questions about Donald Trump’s warnings over the Canada-EU relationship, Carney said Canadians would decide their own language, culture and international partnerships. He said the proposed alliance is intended to reinforce Canada’s sovereignty while expanding cooperation with Europe.

The discussions cover trade, critical minerals, energy, AI, education, defense, connectivity and the Arctic, with both sides describing the proposed relationship as an “alliance for the future.”
