Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in an attack on his residence, the government said in a statement broadcast on state television, marking a major escalation amid coordinated insurgent assaults carried out a day earlier. According to government spokesperson Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, a suicide attacker drove a car laden with explosives into Camara’s home in Kati, near Bamako. The blast triggered a firefight in which he was wounded and later died in hospital. The government has declared two days of national mourning. The regional al Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), along with a Tuareg-dominated rebel faction, claimed responsibility for coordinated attacks across more than half a dozen locations nationwide. Authorities have not yet released an overall death toll from the wave of assaults.
