According to a new report, Trump is preparing to sign a sweeping executive order attacking mail-in voting nationwide, directing the Postal Service to withhold ballots from voters not on a federally approved list, and stripping federal funding from any state that refuses to comply.

This order is blatantly unconstitutional for a number of reasons.

Election administration is a state function. The Constitution reserves that power to the states, and no president can override it with the stroke of a pen. An executive order is not a law.

The funding threat is the most blatant overreach. The Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government cannot weaponize funding to coerce states into compliance.

Using the Postal Service to decide which voters receive ballots is equally indefensible. That is not executive authority. It is voter suppression dressed up in bureaucratic language.

And let’s be clear about the hypocrisy: Trump himself votes by mail and has done so for years.

Election officials from both parties have consistently found mail voting to be secure and reliable. This is not about election integrity. It is about trying to make it harder for Americans to vote.
