Voters in Switzerland have rejected a proposal to cap the country's population at 10 million by 2050, dealing a setback to a referendum backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party.
The proposal was driven by concerns over rising immigration, housing shortages, pressure on public services and growing infrastructure demands. Under the plan, Switzerland would have been required to take measures if the population exceeded 10 million and remained above that level for two consecutive years.
Supporters argued that population growth was placing excessive strain on the country's resources, while opponents warned that the measure could hurt the economy, worsen labour shortages and strain relations with the European Union.
Switzerland's population currently stands at around 9.1 million, with foreign nationals accounting for nearly 28 percent of residents. Official projections suggest the country could cross the 10 million mark in the early 2040s.
The referendum outcome reflects the continuing debate in Switzerland over immigration, economic growth and long-term sustainability.
