Hungary’s newly elected opposition leader Peter Magyar said restoring the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine will be a key condition for rebuilding relations with Kyiv, outlining an early foreign policy stance after his election victory.

Speaking in Budapest, Magyar stressed that linguistic, cultural, and educational rights for the Hungarian minority must be addressed before ties can be fully reset. He said the community “isn’t asking for much,” but wants protections that existed over a decade ago.

Magyar also signaled a pragmatic approach toward Russia, noting that “geography cannot be rewritten,” while adding that Hungary would seek diversified energy sources and review existing agreements. On Ukraine, he said he would urge an end to the war if talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin were to take place.

The remarks come after a landmark election that ended the long rule of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, potentially shifting Hungary closer to a pro-European path while maintaining a cautious, interest-driven foreign policy.
