India has rejected Nepal’s objection to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route via Lipulekh, maintaining that its position remains clear and consistent. New Delhi says the route has been in use since 1954 and dismissed Nepal’s territorial claims as unfounded. The dispute centres on the strategically significant Lipulekh Pass at the India-Nepal-China tri-junction. While Nepal bases its claim on the 1816 Sugauli Treaty, India links the boundary to the origin of the Kali river. Despite differences, both sides have expressed willingness to resolve the issue through dialogue, even as the row resurfaces ahead of the 2026 pilgrimage season.
