A study published in Nature Communications suggests the human brain may not fully enter adulthood until the age of 32, challenging traditional ideas about when adolescence truly ends. Researchers analysed nearly 4,000 brain scans from people aged between infancy and 90, identifying five major stages of brain development and four key turning points at ages 9, 32, 66 and 83. Scientists found adolescence involves ongoing refinement of brain connections, while intelligence and personality stabilise around 32. The findings could improve understanding of mental health vulnerabilities and ageing-related brain changes later in life.
