Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, strongly criticized the UN's latest report on conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, accusing the organization of political bias and claiming the findings were designed to discredit Russia.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Nebenzya said Russia was "extremely disappointed" by Secretary-General António Guterres' decision to include Russian Armed and Security Forces in the UN's annual report. He argued that the allegations lacked sufficient verification and did not meet the threshold required for inclusion.
The Russian envoy also criticized the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, alleging that it demonstrates anti-Russian bias and overlooks alleged abuses committed by Ukrainian forces. Nebenzya further claimed that Russia has repeatedly requested additional information regarding allegations against its military but has not received responses.
The remarks come amid continuing tensions at the United Nations over the war in Ukraine, accountability for alleged abuses, prisoner exchanges, and competing narratives surrounding the conflict.
