A fresh row has erupted over West Bengal govt handing over mid day meals to ISCKON in Kolkata govt schools. It all started with Kolkata Municipal Corporation moving the proposal in all KMC run schools. TMC leaders like Derek O' Brien and Mahua Moitra said this would hurt children's nutrition, particularly the proposal to drop eggs. ISCKON being a follower of the Vaishnav sect serves pure vegetarian meals. TMC leaders and some activists have accused the Suvendu Adhikari govt of imposing an ideological agenda which goes against Bengali food habits and cultural practices. Radharaman Das, Vice President of ISCKON Kolkata, said instead of eggs they would serve soya beans, paneer, rajma and other protein rich and highly nutritious dishes. The mid day meal programme, now known as PM POSHAN scheme, is aimed at increasing nutrition in school going children. It has been the most crucial factor in reducing drop out rates and increasing attendance and enrolment in schools.
