India is reviving the ambitious ₹40,000-crore Oman–Gujarat deep-sea gas pipeline project to secure long-term energy supplies while bypassing the conflict-prone Strait of Hormuz, through which a major share of India’s crude oil and LNG imports currently pass. Proposed 2,000-km subsea pipeline, expected to reach depths of 3,450 metres in the Arabian Sea, would be among the deepest underwater pipelines ever built and is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted, stable and cost-effective natural gas supplies from Oman and the wider Gulf region. Led by GAIL, Engineers India Limited and Indian Oil Corporation, and backed by feasibility studies conducted by South Asia Gas Enterprise (SAGE), the project is designed to reduce India’s dependence on volatile LNG spot markets and vulnerable tanker routes while supporting rising domestic gas demand projected to reach 300 MMSCMD by 2030. The pipeline will transport natural gas in gaseous form directly to Gujarat, benefiting India’s power, fertilizer and petrochemical sectors, while strengthening strategic energy ties with Gulf producers including Oman, UAE and Qatar.
