A24's The Death of Robin Hood is one of those movies that had me saying, "Okay... now what?"

I went in completely blind, knowing nothing other than it was an A24 film, and the first 40 minutes are packed with brutal violence and some genuinely gruesome moments. That said, the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. There are shots in this film that are just stunning, and the landscapes are magnificent.

My biggest issue is with the story. It starts by showing Robin Hood and Little John in a much darker, more complicated light, but by the end it tries to wrap everything up in a more compassionate way that didn't really work for me. I wish they had leaned harder into the darker twist they were building instead of tying it up with a nice little bow.

Still, I was entertained the entire time. Hugh Jackman is phenomenal, the acting across the board is excellent, and somehow I didn't even realize Bill Skarsgård was in it until I looked it up afterward. That's how different he looks.

Visually stunning. Great performances. A story I wanted to love a little more than I did.
