Yevgeny Prigozhin Won Bakhmut. It Destroyed Him.

Everyone called Bakhmut the meat grinder. Two armies, equal losses and all for nothing. That framing is wrong and the truth is worse.

In May 2023 Yevgeny Prigozhin stood in the ruins of Bakhmut and declares victory. Ten months of fighting. The longest battle of the war in Ukraine. The bloodiest urban combat in Europe since 1945. Within five weeks, he marches on Moscow. Within three months, he is dead.

This video reconstructs what Bakhmut actually cost and what it bought. How Wagner built an assault machine around prison recruits and drone-directed artillery. How independent journalists at BBC Russian Service and Mediazona reconstructed nearly 20,000 Wagner dead from state coffin payments alone. Why Ukraine's decision to hold the city may have broken its own 2023 counteroffensive four months later. And why the force that took Bakhmut was destroyed by the victory.

The meat grinder was real. It was never mutual. And it paid nobody.

A NOTE ON THE NUMBERS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Casualty figures for the Bakhmut battle vary widely between sources and are actively contested. Every number in this video is either a documented floor (UALosses' by-name count), a reconstructed estimate with disclosed methodology (Mediazona's coffin-payment tracking), or an assessment from an interested party (NATO, RUSI, US intelligence, or the combatants themselves) clearly attributed as such. No figure in the video is presented as final.
