European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the key outcomes of the European Council meeting, highlighting progress on Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, Europe's economic relationship with China, and negotiations over the EU's next long-term budget.
Focusing on economic security, von der Leyen warned that growing trade imbalances with China are eroding Europe's manufacturing base. She noted that EU imports from China have surged in recent years, resulting in a record €360 billion trade deficit.
"This is not just about cheap imports," von der Leyen said. "We see overcapacities that erode our own manufacturing base. And this is simply not sustainable."
The Commission President stressed that Europe must continue its strategy of "de-risking, not decoupling" from China by reducing strategic dependencies while protecting European markets from unfair trade practices.
She also welcomed progress on Ukraine's EU accession process, announced support for extending sanctions on Russia, praised an interim agreement between the United States and Iran, and discussed plans for a more competitive and secure European budget.
